Workshop: AJAX Made Easy with Ruby on RailsDATE: Friday, February 10, 2006 TIME: 2:00pm - 5:30pm ROOM: Willow DESCRIPTION
Ruby on Rails burst into the Web development scene - dropping jaws, earning a lot of converts and with good reason. It brings about some welcome changes - rapid prototyping and development to the Web, with best practices baked in. It's very cutting edge too - making AJAX development a breeze. This workshop takes a very hands-on approach, giving a quick intro to RoR, taking the audience through quickly developing a Web application on the fly and adding AJAX goodness to it equally fast. Detailed description:
This workshop concentrates on taking the audience through a fully immersive experience on starting a simple Ruby on Rails application from scratch, and slowly developing it into a full-blown application AJAX-enabled application, with all the bells and whistles of a true Web 2.0 application. The workshop will start off with explaining the basic concept of AJAX, it's history, why it is so important and what is being changed by AJAX applications. The audience will learn how to do the popular "Yellow-Fade Technique" done by 37signals, with some interesting applications, auto completion like Google suggest, sortable lists, Google maps, instant tagging, live search and many more AJAX effects. In the process they will also learn about Ruby on Rails' other facets of how it makes UI testing easy, and how to configure the database aspect, scaffolding and all the basic Rails concepts useful to understand the AJAX part.
